Do You Need Gutter Guards? A Michigan Homeowner's Guide

Gutters 19 Jun 2026

If you’ve ever climbed a ladder in October to scoop wet leaves out of your gutters — or watched water pour over the edge during a summer downpour because the downspout was clogged — you’ve probably wondered whether gutter guards are worth the investment. Here’s how to decide.

How Gutter Guards Work

Most gutter protection systems use a mesh screen or solid surface-tension cover that sits over the top of your existing gutters. Rainwater flows in and over the curved surface into the gutter channel, while leaves, pine needles, and larger debris slide off the edge onto the ground instead of packing into the trough.

They don’t make your gutters maintenance-free — fine grit, shingle granules, and seed pods can still collect over time — but they dramatically cut down on how often you need to clean them out.

Signs Your Gutters Need Protection

  • Mature trees overhang your roofline, especially oak, maple, or pine
  • You’re cleaning gutters more than twice a year
  • You’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge during heavy rain
  • You’ve found standing water or sagging sections after a storm
  • You’ve had ice dams form along the roofline in winter

If any of these sound familiar, gutter guards can solve a recurring problem rather than just treating the symptoms each season.

Benefits of Gutter Guards

  • Fewer cleanings — most homeowners go from two or three cleanings a year to one
  • Less ice dam risk — clear gutters drain properly instead of holding water that refreezes along the eaves
  • Longer gutter life — debris buildup adds weight that pulls fasteners loose and bends aluminum over time
  • Fewer pests — standing water and decaying leaves in clogged gutters attract mosquitoes and nesting birds
  • Better foundation protection — water that flows freely off the roof is less likely to overflow and pool near your foundation

When They Might Not Be Worth It

Gutter guards aren’t necessary for every home. If your property has few overhanging trees, or you’re already planning a full gutter replacement, it may make more sense to put that budget toward new seamless aluminum gutters first and add protection later. A quick on-site look at your roofline and surrounding trees is usually enough to tell which situation applies to you.

What We Install

NorthWest Construction pairs gutter guard systems with our seamless aluminum gutters, including upgraded 6-inch options for homes with steep rooflines or heavy water volume. The guards are fastened directly to the gutter and roofline, so there’s nothing loose to blow off in Michigan’s spring and fall winds.

Maintenance Tips Even With Guards Installed

  • Rinse the mesh surface once a year to clear fine debris
  • Trim back overhanging branches where possible
  • Check downspouts for clogs after major storms
  • Have your roofline inspected during your regular roof maintenance visit
