The panel isn’t what fails. The installation is. Here’s how to tell siding contractors apart before you sign, and why the “roofing and siding companies near me” search often produces a better result than hiring a siding-only crew.
Start With Licensing and Insurance
In Michigan, residential exterior work requires a Residential Builders License from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Ask for the number and verify it on the state portal.
Then ask for a certificate of insurance showing both general liability and workers’ compensation. Siding work happens on ladders and scaffolding two stories up. If a crew member is injured on your property and the company doesn’t carry workers’ comp, that exposure can land on you.

Ask What Goes On Behind the Siding
This is the question that separates real siding contractors from panel installers. Siding is a system, and almost everything that matters is invisible once the job is done:
- House wrap / weather-resistive barrier. A continuous drainage plane behind the siding is what actually keeps water out of the wall. Panels alone don’t.
- Sheathing inspection and repair. Once the old siding comes off, rotted or soft sheathing needs to be replaced — not covered back up. Ask how they handle it and how it’s priced.
- Flashing at every penetration. Windows, doors, hose bibs, dryer vents, and electrical boxes each need proper flashing and sealing.
- Insulation options. Insulated siding or a foam underlayment adds R-value and reduces the panel “wave” you see on cheaper installs.
- Trim, corners, and J-channel. The quality of a siding job shows in the details around windows and corners, not in the middle of a flat wall.
A contractor who talks only about color and price hasn’t told you anything about the parts that determine whether the wall is still dry in fifteen years.
Why One Contractor for Roofing, Siding, and Windows Is Usually Better

Your roof, siding, and windows are not three separate projects. Red Flags When Hiring a Siding Contractor
- Door-to-door pressure after a storm. Legitimate contractors don’t need a same-day signature.
- A quote with no square footage or product line named. “Vinyl siding — $14,000” is not a proposal.
- Large upfront payment. A deposit is standard. Most of the money before the work starts is not.
- No plan for what’s under the siding. If nobody mentions sheathing repair or house wrap, they haven’t priced them.
- Subcontracted crews they can’t tell you about. Ask directly who will physically be at your house.
What to Expect From a Good Siding Proposal
A complete written proposal should name the manufacturer and product line, the color and profile, the house wrap being used, how sheathing repair is handled and priced, the trim and accessory details, permit responsibility, timeline, payment schedule, and both the manufacturer warranty and the contractor’s workmanship guarantee.
